Excursion to Konark Sun Temple
Duration: 5-6 hours
All days of the week
"Near Jagannath is a temple dedicated to the Sun. Its cost was defrayed by twelve years revenue of the province. Even those whose judgement is critical and who are difficult to please stand astonished at its sight."
- Abu Fazl, Court Chronicler of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, in Ain-e-Akbari
What this tour is about: The Sun Temple at Konark is said to be the grand masterpiece of Odishan temple architecture. It was built in the 13th century by the Eastern Ganga dynasty and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
The temple complex is designed in the shape of a colossal chariot with seven horses and 24 wheels, carrying the Sun God across the heavens. The temple comprises a sanctum, an assembly hall or porch, as well as a separate dining hall. There are also several subsidiary monuments and shrines. The original tall tower of the sanctum has fallen, but the elaborate platform and the tower of the porch still astonish visitors.
There is an endless wealth of decoration; from minute patterns in bas-relief to boldly modelled free standing sculptures. Carvings representing daily life, erotic scenes, court life, birds, animals and flowers make the Sun Temple a visual treat.
The temple is about an hour and a half away from Bhubaneswar.
